About us

Our history

First Baptist Schools opened in 1987 as an educational ministry of the First Baptist Church of Long Beach. We have watched as God has grown our school from a one-room learning center to our present class structure— consisting of preschool, kindergarten, elementary, and junior and senior high levels— providing our children with a distinctive Christian education.

Our Purpose

The purpose of FBS is to aid families in building students to be godly Christians and good citizens— spiritually, academically, and socially balanced.

FBS desires to graduate young men and women who are academically sound, patriotic, socially refined, and so Biblically knowledgeable that they will live their lives based on Biblical principles and, in so doing, discover and do God's will for their lives.

We believe God has given the responsibility of educating children to the parents (Deut. 6:4-9). The Christian school functions as an educational arm of the church and exists as an extension of the Christian home to benefit parents in their God-given responsibility to “train up a child in the way he should go.” (Prov. 22:6) The Christian school is to assist parents in the educational process but is never to replace the home of its responsibility.

Affiliations

FBS is a member of the Golden State Association of Christian Schools, the California affiliate of the American Association of Christian Schools. FBS is agency approved by the State Department of Education. FBS is also in the process of obtaining accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

FBS is also a member of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the governing body for high school sports in California. As a CIF member school, FBS upholds the highest standards of sportsmanship, eligibility, safety, and competitive integrity in all athletic competitions. Participation in CIF-sanctioned events allows our student-athletes to compete with excellence while developing character, teamwork, and a Christlike attitude both on and off the field.

Academics

FBS functions as a college-preparatory school, offering a rigorous, well-rounded curriculum that challenges students to think critically, communicate effectively, and apply biblical principles to all areas of learning. Our academic program meets and exceeds the requirements set forth by the California Department of Education, ensuring that students are fully prepared for success at the collegiate level and beyond.

First Baptist Schools utilizes the Abeka curriculum, published by Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Florida. Abeka is a nationally recognized institution of Christian education known for its strong academic content, traditional values, and commitment to excellence.

All students in first through eleventh grade are given achievement tests in the spring of each year to measure their achievement in areas such as English, math, science, and social studies. FBS uses the Iowa Achievement Test Series.
